Getting a little nervous about job

Category: Let's talk

I'm on vacation but it seems the last couple of times I went on leave I came back to some pretty rude surprises (lost access to one part of the building upon returning from medical leave and found out about reduction of benefits after last year's vacation).

So instead of the reading I hoped to do I'm nervously hanging out on the web. I call my work friend just to have a meaningful conversation with someone & find out if he's heard of any radical changes.

No such news has he heard, but says volume in his department has dropped. Also friend is giving some thought and looking into moving to a cheaper southern city (don't blame him, we dislike it up here for similar reasons). Also think friend has family member there. If my friend goes, I shall miss him, but I will be happy for him. I don't blame him for wanting to get out of here, I do too but husband does not. I'm something of a misfit up here, so it will have to be a new work friend if my buddy leaves. He's wondering about job prospects there, and if it was me I'd try to sell my house first, but it isn't & it's his life, much as I hate to see him go if it comes to that.

We have had a lot of voluntary attrition in my unit. At the rate we're going, a trained chimp from the zoo is going to be helping finish at ANY time, much less on time. Should I be worried about potential layoff if there is a lot of voluntary attrition? I have a one year certificate program in mind to learn something else should it come to that. Think I'll stop venting and start reading now.

Sorry about your present situation. I don't blame you for being nervous. There's probably a logical reason why so many people are leaving your company. Usually, the first employees to be laid off, are those at the bottom of the ladder. You didn't specify where you were on that ladder. I'd weigh your options carefully. Can you transfer to another department, to another company in your city/State? Just some things to think about. If you feel bored at work, you might want to start thinking about other options. Believe me, boring jobs really suck!! Hth.
